The bear was initially spotted near the Ridgewood Country Club before running through several borough streets -- ultimately ending up in a tree on Benton Road, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.
State Fish and Wildlife was on its way as of 9:30 a.m.
Black bear attacks against humans are extremely rare, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't take precautions to protect themselves.
Authorities advise:
- Never feed or approach a bear;
- Avoidi direct eye contact, which may be perceived as a challenge;
- Never run from a bear -- back away slowly;
- Never corner a bear.
A bear may utter a series of huffs, make popping signs by snapping its jaws and swatting the ground -- these are warning signs that you are too close, experts say.
Slowly back away, avoid eye contact -- and do not run.
